I bought the bike in 1990 when it had been in traffic for 2 years. It was in VERY good condition and I try to keep it that way. The only problem has been the cam-chain tensioner, which I believe all '87-'88 models had to change.
The '87 CBR1000 is a heavy bike, 222kg without oil and fuel and, with its stock 132bhp, it
makes about 11.0 secs for the ¼ mile, and 3.0 secs 0-100 kph.
The fairing is very effective and the top speed is excellent, 258kph actual speed.
On the road it´s a nice bike. Stable, even up to top speed, and quite easy to handle. It delivers the power in a nice smooth way and, with a little help (jerking the throttle or clutch), it wheelies. If it´s in a good mood it can also do power-wheelies.
The fairing works very well even if you're tall (I am 186cm or 6'1"), and if you want the extra speed you can easily bend down a little to escape from the wind. When it is raining you just have to ride at 140 kph or more and the only things that'll get wet are your helmet and boots.
The rear shock absorber is not very good. It's way too soft when you are riding with passenger and packing. The centre stand touches the ground if you ride over a bump when cornering. The front end works very well. The forks are not too hard and the anti-dive works in a gentle way.
The fuel consumption is not high at 0,6 - 0,7 l/m (Swedish mil = 10km) (6 - 7 l/100km) in normal riding. If you're alone on the bike and riding in a steady pace (120-150kph) it can be as good as 0,47 l/m (4.7 l/100km). That means you can ride about 300 km before you have to look for a gas station.
